“The Space Between”
Artist Statement: In this work, fragments of rust-dyed and weathered fabric are layered and hand stitched within open spaces, while wandering lines and recurring gestures move between them. Nothing remains fixed in a single moment; forms overlap, separate, disappear and return in altered ways. The spaces between the fragments are as important as the fragments themselves, creating room for connection, interruption, absence and possibility—much as they do in life. Rust visually recorded change as it settled into the cloth, leaving traces of exposure, time and transformation that could not be controlled, but were nevertheless beautiful.
Materials: Predominantly upcycled fabric of unknown fibre content including upcycled upholstery fabric and linen tablecloth: muslin; cotton and rayon embroidery threads; metallic threads; cotton string; cotton batting. Size: 38 cm x 52 cm (15” x 20.5”)
Techniques: Rust dyeing, fabric manipulation; layering; burning; couching; hand embroidery; and hand stitching.
